A person is considered obese if he or she weighs at least 20% more than the maximum healthy weight for his or her height. A person that is 40% overweight has 2 times the chance of dying prematurely compared to a normal weight person.

Some studies have also shown links between obesity and cancers of the gallbladder, ovaries and pancreas.

People who are overweight have a greater chance of having high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol can also increase the risk of heart disease and are often linked to being overweight or obese.
People that carry the greatest risk for overweight and obesity related conditions include:
  • Those that have a family history of certain chronic diseases or people who have relatives with heart disease or diabetes.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and high blood sugar levels are significant warning signs of some obesity related diseases.
  • Those individuals with excess weight concentrated around their mid-section run a greater risk of developing heart disease, diabetes or cancer over those who carry their excess weight in their hips and buttocks.
